Papst würdigt verstorbenen syrisch-orthodoxen Patriarchen

Papst Franziskus hat den verstorbenen syrisch-orthodoxen Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I. Iwas als Brückenbauer zwischen den Religionen gewürdigt. Als „außerordentlicher geistlicher Führer“ habe Ignatius Zakka I. im Nahen Osten als Mann des Friedens und des Dialogs gewirkt, heißt es in einem Beileidstelegramm. Seine eigene Kirche habe er mit Mut und Weisheit geführt, so der Papst über den Patriarch. Ignatius Zakka I. war am Freitag im Alter von 80 Jahren nach schwerer Krankheit in einem Krankenhaus in Kiel gestorben.

Franzikus lobte den Beitrag Ignatius Zakkas I. für das ökumenische Gespräch zwischen der katholischen und der syrisch-orthodoxen Kirche. Er erinnerte daran, dass der syrisch-orthodoxe Geistliche als Beobachter am Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzil (1962-1965) teilgenommen habe. Ignatius Zakka I. wurde am 21. April 1933 in Mossul im Irak geboren Er absolvierte seine theologischen Studien in Mossul und New York. 1963 wurde er mit nur 30 Jahren Erzbischof von Mossul und 1969 Erzbischof von Bagdad. Am 14. September 1980 wurde er zum Patriarchen gewählt. Offizieller Sitz des Patriarchen ist Damaskus. Ignatius Zakka I. zog jedoch 2012 wegen des Bürgerkriegs in Syrien nach Beirut im Libanon um. Als „Patriarch von Antiochien und dem ganzen Orient“ wurde er von seiner Kirche als der 121. Nachfolger des heiligen Petrus angesehen. Die syrisch-orthodoxe Kirche mit weltweit schätzungsweise 150.000 bis 300.000 Mitgliedern gehört zu den sogenannten altorientalischen Kirchen und geht zurück auf das frühchristliche Patriarchat von Antiochien; ihre Liturgiesprache ist Aramäisch. Es gibt auch einen katholischen Zweig, an dessen Spitze ebenfalls ein Patriarch steht.

With deep sorrow I have learned of the passing of His Holiness Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, father and chief pastor of the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch and all the East, and I hasten to express to you, to the Bishops, clergy and lay faithful, my personal condolences and the prayerful closeness of all Catholics at this time of deeply-felt loss. The whole Christian world has lost one of its outstanding spiritual leaders, courageous and wise in leading people trough very difficult times. Following his election ad Patriarch in 1980 His Holiness was an engaged witness of the successive violent conflicts that have brought untold death and suffering to the Middle East, especially to Iraq and most recently Syria. His Holiness was a man of dialogue and peace with regard to the followers of all religious traditions. In particular I give heartfelt thanks to God for his constant work to improve relations among Christians and, from the time he attended the Second Vatican Council as an observer, for his extraordinary contribution to strengthening communion between Syrian Orthodox Christians and the Catholic faithful. May the Almighty receive him into his kingdom and grant him eternal rest, and may the memory of his long and devoted service to the Church live on as a challenge and a stimulus to all.
